Jewish Cemetery

Jewish Cemetery

In Judaism, burial of the dead is deemed a religious commandment, one that takes precedence even over the study of Torah.

The goals of the Cemetery Committee of the JCCNNM are:

  • To meet the burial needs of our Jewish Community;
  • To beautify the Cemetery with plantings and hardscape. Part of this effort will be to extend the wall which marks the Jewish section and symbolizes inclusion and enclosure within the Santa Fe Jewish community;
  • To make our Jewish Cemetery a bimkom kever, a place where the names of family members who are buried elsewhere or who perished in the Holocaust are memorialized.

The Jewish custom of bimkom kever means ‘in the place of the grave.’  Through this tradition close relatives or friends who are not buried in Santa Fe can be remembered in our Jewish section by memorializing their names on our Cemetery wall.  In our mobile society where many of us live in different places from where our parents are buried, the Remembrance Plaques will allow you to recall loved ones in our own Shalom Section in Santa Fe.

Plaques are made of regionally-sourced stone that resemble the rich, warm colors of Jerusalem and are engraved by local craftsmen. Each plaque will have space on top for a stone marking your visit. Beginning in September 2017, each plaque will be able to store an accessible digital archive of the biography and family history of the deceased. This archive can be downloaded on to your mobile device. Plaques are approximately 10” x 5” x 2.5” with room for two lines, 18 spaces per line. You may put as many names as you wish within the limits. Plaques ordered at the same time will be grouped together and will be mounted permanently to the wall. Plaques may be purchased by check or credit card.

The cost per plaque is $613.00 which includes a tax-deductible donation of $400.00 to be used to extend and maintain the wall.

Payment/Tzedakah plans are also available upon request.
